Craters Of The Moon National Monument Volcanic Lava Landscape
The Inferno Cone, a landmark at Craters of the Moon National Monument, is a large mound of black and dark gray basaltic cinder and scoria with a paved trail ascending its slope. The cone's texture is exceptionally rough, jagged, and porous, contrasting with the smooth gray path and the pale, yellow-green sagebrush (Artemisia tridentata) growing in the foreground. Bright, direct sunlight casts harsh shadows across the volcanic rock, highlighting its rugged surface under a brilliant blue sky with scattered white clouds. The dark, massive cone dominates, with the winding trail creating a strong leading line that draws the eye upward from the broken lava rock at the base.
