Craters Of The Moon National Monument Iridescent Lava Texture
The surface of basaltic pahoehoe lava rock is a landmark feature of the monument's volcanic landscape. The rock displays a complex palette of dark charcoal and black, with an iridescent blue sheen and patches of reddish-brown from iron oxidation. Its texture is a mixture of ropy, folded surfaces and glassy, vesicular formations, creating a rough and intricate topography. Bright, direct light casts deep shadows within the crevices while creating specular highlights on the smooth, glassy tachylyte layer.
