Carolina Beach State Park Colorful Tree Bark

Longleaf pine bark, likely Pinus palustris, fills the frame in a tight macro study at Carolina Beach State Park. Overlapping plates shift from warm rust and amber tones to cool gray and silver, with pockets of burnt orange revealed where outer scales have flaked away. Soft, even light rakes across the surface, emphasizing the flaking, layered texture and the shallow ridges and cracks between plates.
