Carolina Beach State Park Tall Pine Forest

Longleaf pines (Pinus palustris) rise as slender vertical columns across this stand at Carolina Beach State Park, their reddish-brown bark textured with rough, flaking plates. Warm afternoon light filters through the canopy, catching green needle clusters at the crowns while the lower trunks remain in cooler shadow against a deep blue sky. The understory spreads in a dense carpet of low green shrubs and tan grasses, adding a mottled, earthy foreground below the trees. The repeating parallel trunks create a strong rhythmic composition, with a mix of living pines and pale bare snags drawing the eye into the receding depth of the forest.
