Carolina Beach State Park Twisted Pine Forest

Twisted pond pines (Pinus serotina) dominate Carolina Beach State Park's forest, their dark, contorted trunks bending and leaning at dramatic angles above a sparse understory. Warm rust and copper tones of fallen pine needles blanket the ground, contrasting with the charred black bark and the muted green of distant foliage. Low-angle sunlight rakes across the scene, casting long shadows over the textured litter and illuminating the deeply furrowed bark on the foreground trunks.
