Craters Of The Moon National Monument Porous Volcanic Rock
Basaltic lava rock at Craters of the Moon National Monument features a complex, varied surface created by cooling magma. Primarily black volcanic glass exhibits a smooth, bulbous, and glassy texture, reflecting iridescent blue and silver sheens under direct light. Contrasting this are porous, vesicular sections with a rough, crumbly texture and reddish-brown hues from oxidation. Strong, focused light creates bright specular highlights and deep shadows, accentuating the intricate forms created by trapped gas bubbles.
