Craters Of The Moon National Monument Porous Volcanic Rock
A piece of oxidized scoria rests on a bed of dark volcanic cinders. The central rock is colored with rusty orange and yellow-brown hues, contrasting with the matte black and dark gray of the surrounding fragments. Bright, direct light emphasizes the highly vesicular, porous, and jagged texture, casting deep, sharp shadows within the pits and crevices. This iron-rich basaltic rock is a common feature of the volcanic geology found at Craters of the Moon.
