Colorado National Monument Lizard On Rock

A Plateau Fence Lizard Sceloporus tristichus grips the surface of a weathered sandstone formation. Spiny, keeled scales display a camouflage pattern of mottled greys and dark browns against the vibrant rust-orange hues of the rock. Harsh, high-contrast natural lighting highlights the texture of the lizard's skin while throwing the lower portion of the rock into deep shadow. A macro perspective with a shallow depth of field focuses sharply on the reptile's head while blurring the surrounding geological features into a soft, warm wash of color.
