Old City Car USA is the largest car junkyard in the world, however the term junkyard really does not do this area justice. One could almost describe Old Car City as a respite for old American vintage cars from the early 20th century. Thousands of cars are parked all over the area surrounded by foliage, almost becoming one as branches and twigs have made their way around the rusty metal.
For car aficionados the junkyard is a playground home to a range of old automobiles from school buses, trucks, vans to cars. There are even some famous cars such as Elvis Presley’s last car, which was purchased just a few months before he died. Other celebrities such as Johnny Cash also used cars which are now resting in this junkyard.
It knows its beginning as a family owned general store back in 1930s, the area is in fact still owned by the same family. It is now owned and managed by the mayor of Old Car City Dean Lewis. It was Dean Lewis himself who upon inheriting the estate decided to let nature take its course and allow it to surround and even engulf some of the cars, creating a remarkable location. Lovers of art, can also visit the Dean Lewis’ loft and appreciate and even buy some of his pen and ink art pieces painted on Styrofoam cup canvases.
Old Car City USA in Georgia is a celebration of southern beauty, both when it comes to its nature as well as to its folk art. The natural habitat together with the thousands of cars parked around the area, has created a very photogenic environment, which served as a subject or a backdrop for countless photo-shoots and it has been also been featured in many magazine write ups and tv features from around the world.
With 6 miles of trails to follow, visitors can move around the area and observe the landscape freely at $20, however another $10 fee must be paid to take pictures or videos. Concessions are made for children without cameras. Admission is only payable in cash, as are the Styrofoam paintings being sold. The area is open from Tuesday to Saturday 9am to 4pm.
