McVay Rock State Recreation Site is a concealed natural gem in Curry Country, Oregon on the Californian border. At about 50 feet of elevation this park offers breathtaking views of the ocean, as the incoming white woolen waves break against the rocks, and lap onto the sandy beach. The sound of the waves and the wind create the most calming atmosphere.
A rocky path leads to a 19-acre undeveloped beach, as a result, this park is a sought after location for ocean related activities, such as swimming, fishing, surfing, and long walks along the beach. It has also gained popularity as a whale-watching spot, as Gray Whales pass close to the shore as they migrate between California and Alaska. There are two migrating seasons, the first being between October to mid-January when the whales head south to give birth. The second being from mid-January to April when they head to colder waters to find food. Sea bird watching is equally possible at this park, with gulls and pelicans flying low over the beach.
The park also offers a 9 hole golf course with amazing sea views and a large lawn perfect for picnics, although visitors need to bring their own blankets as no tables and benches are available. While camping is not allowed, visitors can still get their own cooking devices and grills as long as they can be turned off easily. Dogs are very welcome at this park, with their very own off-leash zone, the only one in the area.
The McVay Rock State Recreation Site, managed by Oregon Parks and Recreation Department was privately owned up to 1974. This park gets its name from a unique looking rock on the beach. Entrance to the park is free and it is open during the day all year round. Visitors can also park in the nearby parking lot.
